Storm Damage Reduction Reach 2 - Diversey to Fullerton
Chicago Shoreline, Illinois
One of Chicago’s most unique attributes is its 30 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, nearly all of which is publicly owned. The existing shore protection structures, built in the early 1900s, are no longer structurally functioning. Without intervention, about 11 miles of structures would have failed. The Chicago Shoreline Project involves reconstructing revetments to prevent storm damage. Between the US Army Corps, Chicago District and the local sponsors, construction of several portions of the shoreline have already been completed . |

This project provides storm damage protection to the Chicago shoreline, protecting park lands and infrastructure from flooding and eroding, preserving Lake Shore Drive - a Federal Highway and major transportation artery in the City of Chicago.
The project consists of construction of approximately 1900 LF of steel sheet pile revetment wall starting from Diversey Harbor running south to approximately 600 feet north of Fullerton Avenue. The revetment section is composed of a steel sheet pile wall incorporating battered pile supports at intervals along the project, toe stone in front of the steel wall, concrete steps and promenade, pedestrian overlook features, and the creation of additional parkland behind the revetment. |
